John Tait's 'Tin' Research ProjectShocked at the number of times my finely tuned drop shot hit the top of the tin on certain squash courts,I have embarked on a research task to determine which courts have incorrect measurements on the most important dimension on our playing arena - the tin. According to the 'World Squash Singles Rules 2001' that has a permanent home at the bottom of my squash bag, the "height above the floor to upper edge of board" is to be 480mm (or 19" in the old language). I have measured a 480mm length on my squash racket so that I can surreptitiously measure the height of the tin as I do some stretches at the front of the court during my warm up. Below are the results so far: Reggio Calabria Squash Club has PERFECT HEIGHT TINS!!!. The best in Melbourne!! Personally tested by John Tait!! RACV: 480mm (it may have a wobbly side wall, but at least the tin is correct) North Suburban: 480mm (about the only good thing about our old court was the correct tin height) Kooyong: 490mm (unforgivable since these courts were only renovated a couple of years ago) Bentleigh: 490mm (why their doors were placed in the back corners of the court I'll never understand) Mulgrave: 520mm (the winner so far. When you play a boast on these courts aim very high.) Fitzpatrick's: 490mm Gladstone Parks was very surprising - a staggering 51cm. Alma was a bit high at 490mm. Royal South Yarra high at 500mm Hawthorn was also a touch high at 490mm. Naval and Military Club was high at 490mm. Brighton has a stange anomoly. The height to to top of the red line of the tin is 500mm but there is another 10mm of white 'slanted' board above this. So it is possible to to hit a low shot that rises up on rebound giving the impression that it has hit the tin when technically it has not. How should the referee call this one - up or down? Feel free to contribute to the survey as you play at opposition Clubs around Melbourne. Contact John Tait This survey could change the state of Squash world wide as we know it! |
